Loosely based on the celebrated novel by Jules Verne and set in the late 19th Century, LEAGUES offers the story of Professor Arronax (Paul Lukas), his assistant Conseil (Peter Lorre), and harpooner Ned Land (Kirk Douglas), who are coaxed by the United States government to aid in the search for a sea monster said to be terrorizing shipping lanes. But the monster is not of flesh and blood, and soon the three find themselves in the hands of the mysterious Captain Nemo (James Mason) as prisoners aboard the Nautilus–a fully functional submarine capable of ramming ships and sending them to the ocean floor.

Underwater photography was hardly new in 1954, but never had it been used so extensively nor to such visually beautiful effect, and the art designs–particularly those for the Nautilus–are justly celebrated. But for all its beauty, it is the performances which make the film work. James Mason does not merely play Nemo, he seems to be Nemo; after seeing his performance it is impossible to imagine any other actor in the role. Paul Lukas adds yet another brilliantly understated performance to his memorable career, and while Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre are hardly the Ned Land and Conseil of the Verne novel they have surprising chemistry and lend the film considerable dash.

At the time of its release, LEAGUES was the single most expensive motion picture ever made (ironically it would loose that dubious distinction later that same year to yet another film featuring James Mason: A STAR IS BORN), and every penny of the money spent shows in the onscreen result. While many of Disney’s live-action films are fondly recalled, few have had enduring fame, much less claim to status as art–but LEAGUES is the exception, and although the episodic nature of the story seems a shade languid from time to time it remains both a landmark and one of the most influential films of its decade. Truly enjoyable from start to finish.

Like many of the other reviewers of this movie, I’m a pre-boomer who was dazzled by the film as a child. Somewhere in my aging mom’s attic, I have a few bolts (painted wood) from the movie set of the Nautilus, which I “borrowed” from one of the Disney properties as a kid nearly a half century ago. I remember taking a bus from LA to Burbank to stare through the slats of the fence in the back lot of the Disney Studios and seeing a partial model of the Nautilus, perhaps 1/3 scale, tossed in a corner like so much debris. What I would have given to be able to drag that model home.

When I viewed the VHS version of this film a couple of years ago, I was bitterly disappointed by the poor quality which made the watching experience actually painful to a fan like me. But, let me tell you, this DVD is as thrilling as the VHS was painful. This fully-restored version of the film comes roaring back to life in all of its glory and then some. It’s the best film restoration these old eyes have ever beheld. Watched on a state-of-the-art widescreen TV, this is every bit the experience it was in the ’50’s and I think it’s wonderful that this great film is now preserved for the ages, just as it was when it was first released.

Is this a perfect movie? No. Even as a kid, I noticed that the background music was too cheesy, that Kirk Douglas’s songs seemed gratuitous, that the fish swimming outside the large porthole were cartoonish, and that the electrically-illuminated eye of the Giant Squid made an otherwise perfect special effect look a bit fake. I’m just as puzzled by those weaknesses today as I was then, especially since all other aspects of the film, including the numerous, Oscar-winning special effects involving the Nautilus, are masterful. But no movie is perfect and this movie, minor warts and all, is nothing less than a memorial to the genius of Disney, the acting of James Mason, the passion of the Disney staff, and the vision of Jules Verne.

Real slaughterhouse footage and scenes of dirty urban slums set the tone for this stark and obsessive Spanish horror flick. A slaughterhouse employee named Marcos gets attacked by a cabdriver who takes objection when he and his girlfriend are making out in the back seat, and Marcos kills him. This sets in motion a week of killing, first to cover up the cabdriver’s death, and afterward to keep the bodies piling up in his bedroom a secret. He tries to dispose of the body parts at the slaughterhouse, but he can’t do it fast enough and soon the stench of the corpses is becoming a problem, and Marcos slips further and further into madness. Weird, pseudo-sleazy film that works even though it doesn’t even attempt to live up to its title – there’s *no cannibalism*. The dubbing is pretty bad and there’s not much gore (most of the nastiness happens off-screen), but there’s plenty of atmosphere and a sense of desperation builds in Marco’s apartment. The DVD looks great except there is a little “film flicker” in a few scenes – nothing bad though. It’s not big on splatter, but it’s still worth a look for Eurohorror fans.

This one needs a newly restored digital release, but if you like a bit of slaughter house humor and screaming young women, go for this one. Eloy de la Iglesia does it a bit differently, and as usual, interestingly. Not for kids or the squeamish. Great for Halloween parties. Get it now and invite the neighbors over!

Just about anybody reading this review has probably seen “This is Spinal Tap” as many times as the band has changed drummers. What you really want to know is whether the DVD extras are worth the price. YES. Theatrical trailers about cheese rolling festivals, David St. Hubbins with strait hair in an early short that eventually evolved into the film, Rob Reiner begging people to show the movie in their theaters, deleted scenes that develop and explain the cold sores the band keeps ending up with, and the bloody demise of Janine (well, we can dream can’t we?) all this and more can be yours for the low low price of…whatever. Anyway, if you’re a Tap fan and you’ve got a DVD player, get this disc. If you’re a Tap fan and you’ve got this disc, get a DVD player. If you’re a Tap fan without the disc or a DVD player, talk your rich buddy with all the cool home theater equipment into buying this disc, then watch it at his place and eat all the potato chips in the house. If you’re not a Tap fan, you can get a copy of “The Sound of Music” around here somewhere, I’m pretty sure. I’ve always thought of Derrick Smalls as kind of a short hairy version of Julie Andrews anyway.

Superb (m/r)ockumentary of the semi-fictitious band “Spinal Tap”, made up of Michael McKean (“Lenny”, soul mate of Squigy, on the TV series “Laverne & Shirley”), Christopher Guest (actor/director of “Waiting for Guffman”), Harry Shearer (performs voices of 22 different characters on “The Simpsons”), and a random selection of ever-changing drummers. The movie is a tongue-in-cheek parody of washed-up hard rock bands that still think they are God’s gift to the universe. The inspired idiocy borders on genius at times, lending weight to Michael’s observation that there is a “fine line between stupid and clever”.

The DVD is simply amazing. For starters, everything is in character. From the style of the main menu title screen, to the menu voice-overs by the band, and extending through all of the extra material included on the DVD, the personas of the band (and the fictitious director as well) are maintained with perfect consistency.

What makes this all the more amazing is the shear quantity of extras on the disk. For starters, there is about an hour of “deleted” scenes provided. In addition, there are numerous music videos, TV commercials (fake I presume???), and trailers. And as if that weren’t enough, there is also a commentary track throughout the entire film with the band members, completely in character, being as hilariously idiotic as they are in the film. The Spinal Tap commentary track is easily the most entertaining commentary in my extensive DVD library.

The DVD medium is put to splendid use as well. Menu transitions are computer animations inspired by some of the film’s funniest moments. Each menu plays a different “Tap” song, giving you access to a decent percentage of the sound track. And, just as importantly, the animations are not overdone; the menus are still easy to use, and the transitions only take a few seconds.

Overall, this DVD is a great value, and provides a vast amount of material not available in the VHS version. If you are a Tap fan, or would like to be, you NEED this DVD!

In 1966, the Yokota Air Force Base in Japan is busy with the tense job of supporting the U.S. war effort in Viet Nam. Suddenly, in the surrounding town, several suspicious suicides have been reported and students at the base school are behaving strangely. Enter Saya, a mysterious swordswoman who works for a secret organization dedicated to hunting down Chiropterans – demons who subsist on human blood and are the basis for our legends of vampires. All we know is that Saya is ‘The Last Remaining Original’ and that her powers are considerable.

Disguised as a schoolgirl, Saya investigates the school and discovers the presence of three of the horrific creatures. In the middle of the school Halloween party, Saya desperately tries to hunt them down and kill them before they can escape or enter hibernation. If unchecked, the creatures could endanger not only those at the base, but the entire war effort.

‘Blood’ is beautifully made, with a careful blend of three-dimensional CGI work and classical anime illustration. This is an experimental approach that, for the most part, works quite well, heightening the viewer’s sense of realism. The film gains its noir effect from very skilled use of light and shadow, and has surprising color range for having very little direct light.

Both plot and characters are minimalist in style. Nothing is allowed to interfere with the steady increase in tension and pace of action. Thus, the feature length film seems to run by like a single episode of other anime. Even so, the work is so atmospheric, and Saya so strong a character that it develops surprising levels of meaning. I picked this up expecting a pleasant vampire concoction, and I feel I got much more than that. Worth looking for.

As far as the plot goes it might as well be a situation of, Plot? Oops, did we need one of those?

Your more or less dropped into the middle of the story and then bounced from scene to scene so quickly you’re still trying to figure out what was happening in the last one. Unfortunately, you never do. The only piece of evidence that even corresponds with the title “Blood the Last Vampire” is a little folder thingy but even that’s pretty sketchy. Mostly you just run into some pretty fun slice and dice scenes with Saya *the supposed last vampire, or “origanal” as she is referred to all the time (I kept saying, the origanal of WHAT??)* kicking some…creature ass. That’s another problem, you never find out exactly what she’s killing and why and then combine all this along with Saya ’s last scene and it turns out to be one of those movies that will leave you with a “Huh? Did I miss something here?” kinda feeling.
The only reason to buy this movie is for the graphics, but otherwise don’t bother. Go buy Princess Mononoke or something with a halfway decent plot!

This collection comes on two DVDs. I hadn’t seen Mickey Blue Eyes or An Awfully Big Adventure when I purchased, but I bought it because I really enjoyed Music and Lyrics as well as Two Weeks Notice. However, I really enjoyed MBEs and AABA!

Just a note, Big Adventure is a very adult show. It has strong sexual themes and references. Artiscally and psychologically appealing however, with an emotional moral.

Three of the four movies are great (my definition of pleasant distraction). The purpose of a movie, for me, is not to solve major problems or to have a hero or heroine. For me, a simple, funny mix that gives a happy ending, an expected ending. This equals relaxation when I have down time. Hugh Grant is great at being an attractive lead while being effortlessly funny. Have not been able to get into Big Awful Adventure, but three of four give what I purchased the DVD for.

I found this new Disney cartoon to be entertaining, amusing, and better than anticipated. It’s only 60 minutes in length and the time goes by pretty quickly.

After a lame opening with a French turtle, it picks up, and probably gets better as it goes. You won’t find a whole lot of connection between this and the Alexander Dumas story, but if you were expecting a literal adaptation you’ve obviously come to the wrong place. I liked the sense of humor of the movie and I got a few chuckles out of it.

The animation is pretty good for a direct-to-video feature. It looks better than most cartoons on television. The DVD picture is adequate.

The voices are well done. Mickey, Goofy, and Donald sound exactly like they should. Captain Pete was a fun villain.

I liked how famous classical music was used for the songs. Selections include Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers (Nutcracker), Strauss’ Blue Danube, Bizet’s Carmen, Beethoven’s 5th symphony (quickly), and others, all of which are very recognizable.

The special features are both good and bad. Let me review the bad first: I didn’t see much value to the deleted scenes, which are shown in one five-minute reel, mostly in a rough-cut animated storyboard format. An optional commentary track over the deleted scenes is provided not by the director, but by a Disney VP executive. The Opera game basically just allows you to select one of three backgrounds and one of three characters … and watch them sing. That’s it. One “feature” lets you jump right to any song in the movie, which is not much of a feature since … well, isn’t that what “scene selections” are for?

As for the worthwhile bonus material, the “Many Hats of Mickey” is one of the best features: you select one of 9 Mickey hats, and see a short scene from a classic Mickey cartoon, such as Fantasia, etc. Another highlight is the “Cast Commentary,” in which Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pete provide an audio commentary over a 5-minute scene of the movie. They take it seriously and I liked the idea a lot. The Behind the Scenes documentary, which lasts 9 minutes, is entertaining and features interviews with the crew, who all act like they actually filmed Mickey, et al., and it’s amusing.

All in all, Disney’s Three Musketeers is a good production that should entertain children while at the same time be enjoyable for adults.

I actually got this from Amazon as a gift and am quite pleased. I’m not a big fan of Disney, Mickey, or old-school cartoons, but i must say i enjoyed this short feature. The characters, story, and songs are integrated quite nicely. And while the animation is not at the very highest level, it is still quite good and a nice little break from all the cgi and anime stuff going on nowadays. The best parts, for me, in the movie may be the french turtle singing to classical music pieces. Quite a few extras on the disc as well, but not quite as fun as the actual movie. Kids should like this overall, but i think there’s enough here to where adults can appreciate it too. Btw, this dvd has some ’special’ fast play feature that allows it to play the movie and select extras with a touch of a button. I guess it’s for people who aren’t knowledgable with dvds(?), or for kids i’m not sure. Anyway, i recommend this to animation fans, especially if you’re a fan of Mickey and his friends.

This is a wonderful old film, one of Hitchcock’s most terse. Terrific acting, simple clean plot but POOR DVD transfer; grainy image and very thin audio. Avoid this until someone releases a better print. So far so bad with the HITCHCOCK COLLECTION.

Released in 1936, SABOTAGE is a first class example of what makes Alfred hitchcock the master of suspense. As a die hard fan of Hitchcock, I will admit that I originally bought this film on the bargain shelf to complete my collection. After one viewing I had an new favorite Hitchcock film. The plot is simple…London is being hit with acts of sabotage and the police suspect the owner of a small movie theater is responsible.An undercover agent tries to get information from the mans unsuspecting wife. The plot may be simple but the complex emotions that are revealed as the story progresses are not. Sylvia Sydney is outstanding as the wife and does an outstanding job in her portrayal of a woman whos entire world is crumbling around her, and she often does it without uttering a single word. Hitchcock is known for the style of his movies and trust me, this movie is one of his most stylish. Student filmmakers should be required to watch this movie to learn how to create suspense and intrigue. If you have ever seen and loved a Hitchcock movie, watching this movie will show that his unique sense of emotion and humor was fully intact even in his earlier films. I will end this by just saying…WATCH this movie.

This DVD confirms all that I have felt, thought about and read about. It is material channeled by non physical sources. For those sceptical about channeling, think about how some of our holy scriptures came about. Now channels are effectively radios, that pick up broadcasts out there. Bear in mind, not all programmes on the radio/tv are good. Let your heart decide whether something works for you or not. What is said on this DVD, resonates with my being. So enjoy, or not, it is up to you to decide. I would highly recommend this, as in terms of films, there is little as informative about our souls like this.

This DVD of various channelers speaking is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it. The material from each speaker is of the highest caliber. This is a classic, and filled with great material. I hope they produce more DVDs like this.

The video begins with a brief look at various 1960’s era civil rights protests and the violence that often followed such demonstrations. Using footage (much of it somewhat raw) shot during the marches and demonstrations and narrated by Peter Jennings, the montage of video “highlights” of the 1960’s civil unrest provides a strong setting for the showing of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech at the foot of the Lincoln Monument.

The video does not show the entire speech, but it does present enough to gain a good understanding of its content. Perhaps the single most important reason to watch the video (as opposed to reading a text version of the speech) is to witness King’s change in tone, demeanor and style as he reaches the end of the speech. As he begins to call for “letting freedom ring” he abandons his notes and begins to seemingly speak extemporaneously, and the passion in his voice begins to rise. It is a powerful visual, lost in any textual version.

The video concludes with a brief explanation of the assassination and memorial service.

I have heard reference to this famous speech many times over the years but I had never seen the entire speech. After seeing the entire speech for the first time it was easy for me to conclude that this is the best speech ever given by any public speaker with respect to: -sense of urgency created -references for all stakeholders -appropriate emotion and sincerity -skillful use of voice (tone, inflection)

I recommend this speech to anyone who is interested in seeing a very skilfull speaker. In addition, the subject matter of the speech is moving and relevant to many of the issues facing America today.

“Fatal Fury: The Motion Represent” is one of the better video game based Anime’s. Even though the characters have this queer glance to them, overall animation is beautifully drawn and accentuated by the energetic action sequences. A tale of several martial artists out to discontinuance a man from achieving god-like situation, by acquiring Armor of God, might seem a bit cheesy at first, but once you obtain into the movie, it is very gripping to look. Another tall thing about this Anime is that you don’t have to know a thing about the video game to be pleased the movie. But if you do play the video game, it is even a bigger treat, to explore all those awesome fighting moves advance to life in paunchy force. Quite an action spectacle.

I bought the VHS of this movie a long time ago and loved it. I loved it so grand that I watched it about 50 times. I knew everything about the quality of the tape from when the audio screwed up to when obvious parts were going to be fuzzy. When I bought the DVD I watched it and nothing, not one speck of fuzz was to be found, the sound totally blew me away too, plan better than VHS. There are also a lot of extras on the disk that I liked too. Such things as Theatrical Trailers both in English and Japanese along with drawings, a backstory feature, and a lot of information about Viz including additonal trailers from other Viz Video offerings(a lot of them) made this disk well worth it’s money. Words cannot account for the quality of both the video and the audio in this DVD. Amazon.com has the best tag I’ve seen for this DVD anywhere on the internet. Don’t miss out on it!
